Timesink...


Yesterday, I spent way too much time playing with the Spore Creature Creator. It's fun, it's clever, EA and Will Wright are going to make shedloads of cash... you can read about all that on the rest of the Internet. But more than that a whole bunch of people that wouldn't otherwise have contemplated it are going to have fun while remixing parametric 3D models. I think the implications of this for design are enormous. FluidForms is just the start. As these tools become more pervasive and accessible the ability to remix and remake our surroundings will only increase. Will that make things better? Of course not, like most of the creatures in Spore most of it is bound for an unplayed-with, dusty corner of the digital toy box or maybe the design equivalent of a Darwin Award. But just maybe it also means that some things will see the light of day that otherwise wouldn't get a look in.


The growth in ownership of relatively powerful, cheap, personal computers and the parallel upsurge in use of and access to the Internet (at least in the industrialised world) has transformed the means by which we communicate, carry out work and entertain ourselves. This has also brought about greatly enhanced functionality for traditional design techniques, helping practitioners from many areas to bring their ideas to fruition with increased speed and productivity.


Over the past decade we have witnessed an unprecedented development and increased accessibility of CAD/CAM technologies. With the adoption of 3D modelling software, CNC machines and rapid prototyping and manufacturing technologies makers have unprecedented opportunities to design objects that circumvent traditional haptic, craft-based skill sets. These technologies have brought about the opportunity for practitioners with no background in engineering to make use of these them. Not everyone welcomes this.


The pragmatic aspect of increased speed and productivity in the use of these technologies is important to all users. However, the conceptual realisations and the possibility of making innovative types of object for new forms of audience or market are of equal importance but are perhaps less immediately apparent. With the availability of these computer-based technologies, practitioners are confronted with decreased concerns of 'how' to physically make something and a greater opportunity to engage with 'what' that object is.


The ability to generate construction information directly from design information has fundamentally changed the relationship between conception and production for many practitioners. CAD was initially an assistive technology that enhanced the existing practices of design – an electronic replacement for pencil and paper. This has rapidly evolved beyond what you can do (easily) with pencil and paper (e.g. computer-based visualization processes such as animation and photorealistic rendering). What we see happening currently goes beyond merely designing things to designing the systems that allow things to come into being. Practitioners I have mentioned here recently (and many others) are doing this: Automake, FutureFactories and THEVERYMANY.


Anyway, my point is maybe I wasn't actually goofing off yesterday when I was playing with the Spore Creature Creator. Maybe I just have to redefine what 'work' can be?

This is an interesting book [even if the introductory essays are a little strange - lost in translation, maybe?] It is a good resource. I particularly like the tables at the start of each section that graph the properties and applications of the materials under the following headings:

Shape Performance
Optical Performance
Sustainable Performance
Integrated Performance
Responsive Performance
Material Profile
Process Technique
Case study Applications

The criteria used to determine innovative materials are:

It is non-polluting during the production process
It has been realised with low cost-effect technology
It is fully tolerable, recyclable and biodegradable
It is easy to stock
It is lightweight while maintaining high mechanical strength
It adds together properties of several materials (composite and nanocomposite materials)
It is obtained through technological transfer coming out of application from a different field

Neil Gershenfeld @ TED (video)



Although I have been a huge fan of Neil Gershenfeld's work since I read his book 'Fab: The Coming Revolution on Your Desktop' I hadn't seen this presentation from TED until I saw it over at the Ponoko Blog. The presentation condenses the book into 18 minutes with plenty of examples.

Towards the end of the talk Gershenfeld indicates that the 'looming bug' of Moore's Law in the transition from 2D to 3D becomes the 'ultimate feature'. Fantastic stuff!

Elsewhere on the web Bruce Sterling posted a link to the article The Transformation of Manufacturing in the 21st Century by Lawrence J. Rhoades which is worth a read. Intrigued by the term “Innofacturing™” in the article I Googled it to find a place-holder for the innofacturing.com home page. Interesting.

[Rhoades is president and chief executive officer of Ex One Corporation whose ProMetal Division produces systems specifically dedicated to making metal components. Fast-uk President Keith Brown once had ProMetal take a look at building one of his sculptures. I think he was having problems with the internal geometry of the piece. I'll have to ask if it ever got built.]

UM3D Lab





I am in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA as a Roman J. Witt Visiting Artist. I am thoroughly enjoying it. I have spent quite a bit of time at the excellent UM3D Lab. This is an interdisciplinary service facility provides the university community with access to 3D computer modeling, 3D visualisation, and rapid prototyping of physical models. The Lab's resources and consulting services are available to students, faculty, and staff from all schools and colleges for exploration, education, and research. I think this is an excellent model of how to provide access to these technologies across disciplines within the University.

I was also very impressed with the Grant Opportunities [Collaborative Spaces] programme that awards grants to research projects driven by students using new tools to enhance collaborative learning. The projects must be interdisciplinary and must engage rich media and/or locative technologies.

The common understanding of "literacy" has narrowed down to reading and writing, but when the term emerged in the Renaissance it had a much broader meaning as a mastery of the available means of expression. However, physical fabrication was thrown out as an "illiberal art," pursued for mere commercial gain. These students were correcting a historical error, using millions of dollars' worth of machinery for technological expression every bit as eloquent as a sonnet or a painting." pp 7.

"And "art" did not mean just creative expression; it meant much more broadly the mastery that was developed over each of these domains. Liberal arts originally has the rather rousing meaning as a mastery over the means of personal liberation. They're now associated with academic study that is remote from applications, but they emerged in the Renaissance as a humanist pathway to power... Unfortunately, the ability to make things as well as ideas didn't make the cut; that was relegated to the artes illiberales, the "illiberal arts", that one pursued for economic gain. With art separated from artisans, the remaining fabrication skills were considered just mechanical production.
